Our Group Musical Theatre exams inspire performers to develop their creativity in a collaborative environment, building their confidence and trust in one another. Our syllabus encourages performers to lead with agency as they explore the separate skills of Musical Theatre, combining their efforts to create an engaging programme. After completing their exam, performers will have demonstrated their ability to work as a team, gained more confidence in their communication skills and they may have overcome the challenge of adapting and negotiating ideas presented by the group, all of which are vital skills in any career path.

A Group exam features 3 or more performers who act, sing and dance, and whilst there is no maximum restriction in numbers, every performer should have the opportunity to participate meaningfully within the group or cast.

All performers within a Group Performance or Full Production will be awarded the same mark. The performer being assessed as an Individual will be awarded a bespoke mark.

Showcases can be assessed as either a Group Performance or Full Production depending on whether an audience is present.

On the day for Group Performance:

The group is welcomed into the examination space at their allotted Group Performance Time. The accompanist or facilitator (who cues and controls any digital music) joins for the performance. Facilitators will have an opportunity to check the compatibility of the tech upon arrival at the centre. Performers will introduce themselves and the pieces they will be performing. Performers will not be prompted during the practical task; they are encouraged to take their time to get back on track. At the completion of the performance, the group will leave the space.

On the day for Full Production:

If performers are taking part in a Full Production exam, they will most likely be familiar with the space and can prepare for the performance in their dressing rooms/warm up space. Should the Centre wish, and should there be space, the examiner would be pleased to meet the cast before or after the performance to say hello, face to face. Performers will present their production as rehearsed with the examiner sitting amongst the audience.

Reflection for Individual Qualifications:

Any performers who are taking an individual qualification will be invited back at their Reflection Time for a group Reflection, numbering no more than four at a time. This Reflection supports meaningful and incisive dialogue, which articulates the performers’ knowledge and understanding of their process. This perceptive conversation between performer and examiner allows for a bespoke mark to be awarded.

Mountview Exams are mapped to the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), up to Level Three of the RQF Framework. There is an incremental rise in task requirements and skill integration as the Grades ascend, culminating in an integrated and multi-skilled Musical Theatre performance.

Entry: Preview Certificate

At Preview, the performance focuses on connection to music through storytelling and reflecting on the experience of performing with music. For individual qualifications, performers will be able to engage in conversation with the examiner and talk about what has been exciting or interesting to perform.

• Performers require 25 hours of guided learning and 15-20 hours of independent learning and rehearsal  
• Comparable equivalent: English for Speakers of Other Languages

Level One: Grades 1, 2 & 3

At Level One, the performance focuses on the separate skills that make Musical Theatre, exploring musicality through text, as well as through movement and song by means of characterisation and storytelling. For individual qualifications, performers will reflect on the creative choices they have made and why particular pieces have been chosen.  

• Performers require 40 hours of guided learning and 20-30 hours of independent learning and rehearsal  
• Comparable equivalent: GCSE Grades 3-1, NVQ Level 1

Level Two: Grades 4 & 5

At Level Two, the performance focuses on removing the separation between the disciplines and begins to integrate Musical Theatre skills with more confidence. It is character-led, performed with purpose and intention, and is supported by emerging physical and vocal skills from the performer. For individual qualifications, performers will demonstrate a corresponding development in their understanding of techniques within the context of characterisation and scenario, as the disciplines become more integrated and character led.

• Performers require 60 hours of guided learning and 30-40 hours of independent learning and rehearsal  
• Comparable equivalent: GCSE Grades 9-4, NVQ Level 2

Level Three: Grades 6, 7 & 8

At Level Three, the performance features the three key components of Musical Theatre skills as fully integrated and co-existing. The performer has full ownership of musicality, storytelling and characterisation through text, song and dance, as well as through the connections and transitions between those components. For individual qualifications, Reflection moves across the theoretical, the practical, and the artistic. It is an opportunity to explore and reflect on aspects of the work in collaborative discussion with the examiner, and share ideas with clarity, from the first idea to the final performance, addressing all aspects of the creative process.

• Performers require 90 hours of guided learning and 40-50 hours of independent learning and rehearsal  
• Comparable equivalent: AS & A Level, Access to Higher Education
